Across each season of Stranger Things, there have been many constants that have helped to influence the season’s stories. Chief among them has been Dungeons & Dragons, which helped to kick off the entire series.
We can all still remember that scene with Dustin, Will, Mike and Lucas playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons that fateful night Will went missing. It’s what kicked off the whole series and set the stage for the shocking events which have come with each passing season since.
Stranger Things season 4 continues to lean heavily into Dungeons & Dragons lore.
During the season 4 premiere, the Hellfire Club comes together to complete a campaign organized by the club’s leader, Eddie, with some help from an unlikely player — Lucas’s younger sister, Erica. In the game, they toss around a lot of terms that might not be familiar to those without Dungeons & Dragons knowledge including D20.
The use of the term might have you asking, “What in the world is a D20?” So what exactly is a D20 and what is its role in the game of Dungeons & Dragons?
In the game, each die begins with the letter “D” and the number associated with it refers to the number of sides on the die. A D20 is a twenty-sided die used within the d20 System adapted by Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizard of the Coast.
During the game, the D20 is used frequently for a number of actions including attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, saving throws, and determining turn order in combat.
