Knight told Variety that when the pandemic happened, they lost a year of production, “So we put our heads together and thought that it would be a good idea to do a movie instead of doing series seven.”

It is proposed as a sequel since it’s basically taking the place of a seventh season. It will continue Tommy Shelby’s story and likely wrap it up.

It’s hard to say which cast members will return for the movie. Cillian Murphy has not been definitively confirmed, but he will likely return. Knight previously said Tommy Shelby would have a role to play in the film, and Cillian Murphy revealed to Deadline that he would come back if there was more story to be told. It seems like there is a strong possibility Murphy will be back, and once filming begins, we should get more confirmed casting news.
